Kamakura Stroll Vol.12 – 鎌倉散策 高徳院

久しぶりに晴れたので鎌倉の大仏様にお参りしてきました。
夕日に照らされた大仏様がとっても良い表情をしていました。

It finally cleared up today, so I went to pay my respects to the Great Buddha in Kamakura.
Bathed in the setting sun, the Great Buddha had a truly wonderful expression.

About the Great Buddha at Kotoku-in Temple
The Great Buddha of Kotoku-in, designated a National Treasure, is a bronze seated statue of Amida Nyorai widely renowned for standing in the open air (roza). Measuring approximately 11.3 meters in height and weighing about 121 tons, this statue—though slightly smaller in scale than the Great Buddha (Daibutsu) of Todai-ji in Nara—retains much of its original appearance from the time of its creation, making it an exceptionally significant masterpiece in the history of Japanese Buddhist art.
According to the Azumakagami, the official chronicle of the main branch (Tokuso) of the Hojo clan, construction began in 1252 (the fourth year of the Kencho era). It is said that the funding was raised through donations collected by the monk Joko. However, many details surrounding its creation remain unclear to this day, and even the identity of the original sculptor has yet to be definitively specified.

From Japan.
